8 benefits & uses of honey, you may not know!

Article written by Sarah Luta of Eburru Gold Honey

The adulteration and contamination of honey has caused an impending threat to its reputation as a natural health product. In Kenya, there is widespread adulteration of honey with cheaper substances like molasses, corn syrup, sweet banana syrup, sugar, artificial flavors, etc.

What most people are unaware of is that the quality and type of honey one uses significantly determines its nutritional and medicinal effectiveness. Artificial honey, which is what is commonly available, is usually devoid of essential nutrients, considerably undermining the consumers’ health intentions.

There is great news as more and more individuals and families become more health-conscious and take charge of their nutrition, health, and wellness. Research shows that more people are looking to beekeepers to provide real, authentic honey as a substitute for refined sugar for their day-to-day use.

Honey has been used in traditional medicine for centuries and is considered by most users to be the most beautiful products of nature with a wide range of beneficial uses;

 1) Natural Sweetener

Raw honey is a healthy, natural sweetener option for younger health-conscious individuals and for the aging population who seek the health benefits of raw honey. Such people expect the foods they consume to provide some kind of added nutritional benefit, which will enable them to maintain a healthy lifestyle and promote their overall health. Go ahead and add your honey to your favourite food and beverage without the negative health impact of added sugars. However, keep in mind that raw honey is still high in calories and sugar content, and it is important to exercise moderation.

  2) It’s rich in antioxidants

Raw honey is a rich source of antioxidants beneficial in the protection against cell damage, the revival of the immune system and fighting infections. Its consumption has been linked to reducing the risk of some types of cancers, cardiovascular diseases (hypertension, heart attack and stroke) and inflammatory diseases.

3) It’s an energy booster

Honey is naturally rich in micro-nutrients and is a good source of energy. Honey was used by runners in the Olympic Games in ancient Greece to boost their energy and to increase athletic performance.

4) Remedy for coughs and cold

Honey has been an age-old remedy for sore throats, and its consumption helps to soothe coughs and reduce throat irritation.

5) Soothing agent

The antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties of honey make for a great soothing agent for wounds and minor burns as it cleans wounds and stimulates cell regeneration. Honey helps to reduce inflammation in the food pipe by coating the oesophagus, making it useful in the treatment of ulcers and other gastrointestinal disorders, i.e., inflammation, acid reflux, and heartburn.

6) Great sleep!

Honey is a natural sleeping aid for those having problems sleeping (insomnia). It is a natural relaxant that helps alleviate insomnia by inducing regular sleep patterns.

7) Calms the mind!

The natural sugars in honey are known to give an instant boost of energy and produce a calming effect, uplifting one’s mood, thereby reducing anxiety, stress, depressive feelings, and relieving migraine headaches.

 8) Makes you look good!

Honey is highly prevalent in cosmetic treatment because of its antibacterial and antioxidant properties. We use honey in face masks and exfoliants for the treatment and prevention of acne and to moisturize, soothe and clarify skin. It is excellent for slowing down aging and in restoring lustre in hair when used as a hair conditioner.

ABOUT ME

My name is Sarah Luta, and I run a social beekeeping enterprise that delivers EBURRU GOLD HONEY; A premium 100% wild forest honey. Age-old Ogiek beekeeping traditions inspire our honey. The Ogiek are Kenya’s last minority honey-gathering forest dwellers, traditionally famous for generations of sustainable beekeeping and forestry conservation. My introduction to the life of bees started three years ago, and what can I say? It’s been quite a buzz….. Our enterprise is not only tackling poverty at the grass-root level but also promoting forest conservation efforts. Aside from this, I love to hike!! Hiking in forests and on mountains and witnessing beauty every step of the way! I love to dance, read, and just BEE!!
